Great ice conditions in most locations
The past few days have been very dynamic with temperatures going from -40C to +10C followed by heavy rain. Luckily, the ice conditions are great for the most part.
Based on ice conditions checks from December 27, 2022
Yesterday's rain brought a lot of water on top of the ice in some locations but the winds have helped clear most of it. While we are still finding some pools that are lightly frozen over, the ice below is strong and over 55 cm thick in the areas we checked. As usual, make sure to check conditions for yourself before heading out on the ice.
Preacher's Point and Cline Landing looked more snow-covered yesterday (we didn't have time to go on the ice there). The area that can be accessed from the Ice Bubbles Parking Lot was in great shape, especially if you are willing to walk a little further to get away from the crowd.
We'll see temperatures cool off slightly in the coming days. This is good for the ice but will make roads like the one to Crescent Falls and parking lots icier.
Where to Go
Preacher's Point and Cline Landing are mostly snow-covered while the area from Abraham Slabs to the Ice Bubbles Parking Lot is mostly in great shape. The rain has pooled in some locations leaving those areas cloudy but we are finding some great patches throughout.
You can find out more about each of these locations here.
FAQ
Is it safer if I stay close to shore? Most accidents happen on the shore and near the shore where the ice is the weakest.
Plan Ahead to be Safe
Please make sure to follow a few simple tips to be safe on your next adventure:
- Know where you are going. We're seeing a lot of people putting themselves into dangerous situations simply by being in the wrong place.
- Don't get stuck. Parking lots and access are not always maintained. Driving down to the lake is a lot easier than driving back up. If you have any doubts, park at the road and walk in.
- Be prepared for the weather. It's cold and windy on Abraham Lake. Dress warm and bring extra clothes in your vehicle.
We share more ice safety information here. If you are not familiar with ice safety or Abraham Lake we recommend booking a tour with local guides.

Ice Safety
We share this information to help visitors to the area plan their trip. This represents the conditions we have observed at a specific point in time. Ice safety depends on many more factors than just ice conditions and anybody going on the ice should have the knowledge and experience required to assess the risks, or should consider going with a guide.
