Abraham Lake Ice Conditions – December 4 2020

Great Ice Bubbles but Variable Ice

Recent warm temperatures leading to variable ice conditions. Use extra cautions or stay on the ice that is on the ground.

Based on ice conditions checks on December 4, 2020

We had a great start to the season with good ice conditions at Preacher's Point as early as October 30 this year. Unfortunately, the warm weather we're currently experiencing is making things more challenging.

At this point, the only section of the lake that is frozen is Preacher's Point at the south end of the lake, where the North Saskatchewan River enters Abraham Lake. The rest of the lake does not usually freeze until mid to late December.

December 4 Ice Update

The ice near the main access at Preacher's Point is mostly sitting on the ground now as a result of the lake level dropping around 75 cm per week for the past month.

We have been finding variable ice over the main river channel but for the most part we saw over 22 cm of clear ice. Areas near the point had open water and very weak ice near the shore.

Ice Safety

We share this information to help visitors to the area plan their trip. This represents the conditions we have observed at a specific point in time. Ice safety depends on many more factors than just ice conditions and anybody going on the ice should have the knowledge and experience required to assess the risks, or should consider going with a guide.
