Explore the west end of David Thompson Country, from the historic mining town of Nordegg to the stunning Bighorn Canyon and Crescent Falls. Take in the views along Abraham Lake on a hike, heli-tour or horseback riding adventure. Discover the Kootenay Plains with their rich natural and human history.

You’ll see how David Thompson Country offers a less crowded alternative to the mountain parks, with stunning views and lots of activities for the outdoor enthusiasts amongst your guests. This tour will take you on a full day of adventures that include pie tasting, a guided tour of the Brazeau Collieries National Historic Site, a picnic lunch at the scenic Crescent Falls, a taste of horseback riding in the Rocky Mountains with McKenzie’s Trails West and a guided walk on the Kootenay Plains along the North Saskatchewan River.

This tour is part of the Experience Experts program offered by Tourism Red Deer and regional partners to help local industry employees learn more about the city and region so that they can share those experiences with visitors. Itinerary

This tour is offered on May 30, 2017 and is open exclusively to Central Alberta tourism industry employees. Reservations are required and must be made through Tourism Red Deer.

Where To Meet

  • 7:00 am – Red Deer Guests: Check-in with your guide at the Visitor Information Centre & Alberta Sports Hall of Fame on Highway 2
  • 8:15 am – Rocky Mountain House Guests: Check-in with your guide at the Visitor Information Centre

Miners’ Cafe and Coliseum Gift Shop

What better way to start the day than by tasting some of the pies that have made the Miners’ Cafe famous. After a cup of coffee and some more tasting of their delicious baked goods you’ll get to learn about their gift shop which focuses on selling Alberta made products.

Brazeau Collieries National Historic Site

Next is a guided walking tour of the historic mine site where you’ll about the life of the early miners, how Nordegg was a different kind of town and the important role it played in the development of the area.

Crescent Falls

A short drive takes us along the Bighorn Canyon, one of Alberta’s deepest gorge, to the impressive two-tiered Crescent Falls. We’ll be having lunch here, which is included in the tour!

Abraham Lake

After lunch we’re headed along Abraham Lake, past Allstones Cove and Windy Point and with great views of the Rockies including Mount Michener.

McKenzie’s Trails West

The team at McKenzie’s Trails West will be waiting for us and if you’re interested you get to go on a 30 minutes horseback ride in the Rocky Mountains! The short tour is a great introduction to their longer rides and a great way to start exploring the Cline River area. Please note that you must be reasonably active and weight under 260 pounds to join this activity.

Kootenay Plains

Our last stop of the tour takes us to the Kootenay Plains, an area rich in human and natural history. If time allows, we’ll walk to the North Saskatchewan River suspension bridge, the longest in Alberta.

Return

  • 5:45 pm – Rocky Mountain House drop off
  • 6:45 pm – Red Deer drop off

The itinerary may change without notice due to the weather and other factors. Our goal is to always provide the best possible experience.

Logistics

What´s Included

  • A professional guide.
  • Admission for all activities and food samples.
  • Gourmet picnic lunch and snacks.
  • Guides carry emergency equipment, including first aid kits, bear spray and cell phone or satellite communicators on all tours.

What You Need To Bring

  • Proper footwear (walking/running/hiking shoes or boots)
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather
  • A windbreaker, shell and/or rain jacket
  • A warm sweater (conditions can chance quickly)
  • A water bottle
  • Camera

What kind of lunch is included? Can special diets be accommodated?

Lunch for this adventure includes the choice of a veggie (hummus, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and green pepper on a Montreal style bagel) or honey maple turkey sandwich (honey maple turkey, Boursin cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber with deli mustard on a Montreal style bagel), juice box, veggies and hummus, fruits and dessert. Please make sure to mention any dietary requirements when you book your adventure and we will try to accommodate whenever possible.
