Rail Trails and Trestle Bridges with Coaching with Lucinda

April 28 @ 10:00 am 3:00 pm

If you love ghost towns, cool bridges and Alberta history- This tour is for you! This is a beginner guided hike and historical tour. We will be parking at the old townsite of Saunders. There are 2 parts to this tour. First we will be exploring a few short trails around the ghost town to some historical points of interest. Taking a walk back in time to discover Saunders, your guide will tell the stories of this old mining town and those that lived there. A maze of trails takes us to a stunning view point, and old graveyard, Big John’s spring and the former location of some of the cabins. We will come back to the parking lot and connect with the rail trail. A very flat and wide-2.5km following the rail trail takes us to the stunning Taunton/Fortner Trestle bridge. Built on the original foundation this bridge has been completly redone to allow for bikes, quads and hikers to follow the rail trail from Rocky Mountian House to Nordegg. Picnic tables and benches on the bridge is a great place for lunch and photos before we head back. Altogether our day will be approx 9km with just a few rolling hills. No big climbs. Very possible for a beginner hiker.
