Abraham Lake Ice Conditions – December 2 2022

ONE OF THE EARLIEST FREEZE-UP IN RECENT MEMORY

The ice still thin and conditions could change in the coming days but most of the lake was frozen today.

After a warmer-than-usual fall, November brought cold weather and Abraham Lake began to freeze on December 1st this year. The ice we found was 8 cm thick at Cline Landing and Abraham Slabs, not quite enough for us to head out over deeper waters but enough to get us excited about the start of the ice bubble season in those areas.

If you’re planning to head out, make sure to check the ice yourself before you go. Conditions may change quickly over the next few days as the cold snap ends and we return to more normal temperatures.

Keep in mind as well that many of the parking lots and access are not cleared in the winter. Drive cautiously and if in doubt, do not drive in. The nearest tow trucks are over an hour away and cell phone reception is limited in the area.

The ice was snow-covered today but we were finding some clear ice and bubbles underneath. Make sure to bring a broom with you if you’re heading out in the next few days.

Preacher’s Point has been frozen since November 3rd this year and we had over 45 cm of ice there earlier this week. This is probably a better option for now, but again, make sure to check the conditions for yourself before you head out. If you’re not sure how to do this, then we recommend going with a local guide to ensure that you have a great experience.

As always, the highest risks on Abraham Lake are on the rocky shoreline as you approach the lake and while standing on the ice near the shore. Make sure to brush off on your ice safety skills before you go.
