Tiger Stripes, MArshmallow Ice and Bubbles
Some of the strangest and most interesting ice patterns we’ve ever seen on Abraham Lake.
The ice held out through the warm spell and remains thick and strong at 40+ cm in the areas we checked. There is weak ice on the shoreline and some fairly wide cracks in places, so watch your step as you get onto the lake. The lake was about 50% snow-covered as of February 6 with some large patches of clear ice throughout.
The drastic fluctuations in temperatures combined with snow and wind have created some very interesting ice features and patterns throughout the lake, and those willing to explore will find a bit of everything, from frozen waves to tiger stripes to marshmallow-looking ice, and of course, ice bubbles!
Where to Go
The Ice Bubbles Parking Lot, Hoodoo Creek, Abraham Slabs and Cline Landing all have quirky ice features and some good bubble patches to discover for those willing to put in a bit of effort.
