Abraham Lake Ice Conditions – March 10 2024

Spring conditions are here

The recent snowfall was quickly followed by a strong Chinook and while the winds have been fierce, warm temperatures mean a fairly thick snow crust has formed across the lake. The wind has cleared off enough of the snow that you can find some good patches of clear ice and bubbles if you take the time to explore. You will notice that the late season honeycomb patterns have started to form close to shore.

This time of year, we recommend getting to the lake in the early morning or late afternoon for the best viewing conditions. As the sun gets stronger the ice tends to fog up, meaning it is harder to see and photograph the bubbles. If your schedule allows, try to come before 11am or after 4pm.

Where to Go

The Ice Bubbles Parking Lot, Hoodoo Creek and Abraham Slabs all have some great late season patches of bubbles amidst a fairly thick snow crust.
